12 Things I Learned in November

Better late than never…

  1. The Faroe Islands (see photo above) are an archipelago of 18 islands with a population of 53,000 and two dozen tunnels connecting them; they even have an undersea roundabout!

2. The first place gold was discovered in the United States was in North Carolina in 1799.

3. Part of immigrating to the United States includes a biometrics appointment. I had to go through airport level security and have my picture and fingerprints taken, but it was over in under ten minutes. (I was early and left before my appointment time even arrived.)

4. The North Country Library app lets you link your family cards and you can easily toggle between accounts when placing holds. Game changer! (Especially when there is a limit of 30 check outs and 10 holds per card.)

5. On Veterans Day local gas station Stewart’s sold 99 cent ice cream cones — and we forgot to go!

6. A larding needle is used to insert thin strips of lard into raw meat to baste it as it cooks. (Sounds like way too much work.)

7. The wild turkey we ate was delicious and not tough; I brined it and turned it into excellent pot pie and soup.

8. I tried chili crisp for the first time and I can see why people rave about it. (Now to not lose it in the forest of condiments in our fridge.)

9. “Jejune” is an adjective meaning naive or simplistic. (Have you heard this word before?)

10. I thought EMT was another term for paramedic, but I learned that paramedics are more highly trained and can administer more advanced medical procedures than EMTs.

11. You can watch all the seasons of All Creatures Great and Small on PBS.org for free until December 23 (in the U.S.) and I just noticed that Ken Burns’ two-part Leonardo da Vinci documentary is available until Dec 17.

12. A syllabary is a set of characters representing syllables used like an alphabet in some languages. (I find this fascinating and hope to blog more about it soon.)

    Things I learned in November:

Lawrence, Kansas is a big hub for Hallmark cards.
People in Dublin were less interested in Philadelphia then Philadelphia was interested in Dublin. At the Love park portal there was a fair bit of time, their side of the portal was empty.
I learned that you can have an entire theater keep their cool enough to not sing a long with “Alexander Hamilton”
I learned that was a limit to the amount of ice cream Grant and I could eat
There’s other games you can play in the gaga ball pit.
The RPCNA’s Selma church reported to the broader church in March of 1965 that no more should come from the north for the demonstrations, they had enough, and more would pose logistical concerns that they couldn’t handle.
I learned more about the RP mission works for 102 years in Syria, and some overlapping time in Turkey. That was as long as the government would allow us. The result of the Crimean war opened a way for this field.
