Paintings of Novgorod

Novgorod is one of the names mentioned in the bardcore version of “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” Here it is near the end of the second half of verse 1.

Charlemagne, Alfred
Anne Boleyn without a head
Few things here to read
But the Nibelungenlied
Castile with Aragon
Second pope in Avignon
Novgorod, Chinggis Khan
Beowulf, Decameron

I had never heard of Novgorod, but I now know it is short for Veliky Novgorod, a city in Russia. Novgorod is first mentioned in 859 AD and was one of Europe’s largest cities in the 14th century. Today it has a population of approximately 220,000 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I thought it would be fun to share some paintings of Novgorod with you.

“Medieval Novgorod in Winter,” painting, 1909

“Novgorod Marketplace,” watercolor and pencil on paper mounted on cardboard by Apollinary Vasnetsov, 1908-1909

“Destruction of the Novgorod Veche,” oil on canvas by Klavdy Lebedev, 1889
