This past summer I posted about my dream career inspired by my reading of Madeleine Stern and Leona Rosenberg’s joint memoir. As the book blurb states, “Rostenberg and Stern are renowned for unlocking the hidden secret of Louisa May Alcott’s life when they discovered her pseudonym, A.M. Barnard, along with her anonymously published ‘blood and thunder’ stories on subjects like transvestitism, hashish smoking, and feminism.”
Well, a recent article in The Guardian tells about an academic who has followed in their footsteps. In 2021 Max Chapnick, now a postdoctoral teaching associate at Northeastern University, discovered another body of work which he believes was written by Louisa May Alcott, this time under the pseudonym E.H. Gould. Chapnick says, “The cool thing about working on Louisa is that there’s still more out there”… and of course there must be countless other literary discoveries waiting to be made. I’m looking forward to hearing about them.
