It’s a hot week here and surely we’re past the last of the frost warnings?! Anyway, here are some of my favourite things from the past month.
Read
I’m almost finished Fellowship Point, a novel centred on two eighty-year-old lifelong friends with summer houses in Maine.
It turns out the kids and I read a lot of animal-related books recently. We especially loved My Zoo Family and Owls in the Family. (Incident at Hawk’s Hill and The Incredible Journey are also well-written but more realistically graphic than I expected!)
I really liked this picture book: Surrounded by Sea by Gail Gibbons.
Do/Eat
For our 11th anniversary we stayed overnight in downtown Toronto. It was a delightful food-centred getaway. We visited:
- Caribbean Queen (Jamaican buffet)
- Delysees (luxury bakery)
- MARKED Restaurant (all-inclusive brunch)
The kids stayed with some of their honorary grandparents and had a blast as well (making cupcakes, learning woodworking, feeding the chickens, jumping on the trampoline, watching Beverly Hillbillies, even canoeing).
For her ninth birthday Phoebe made her own yellow sheet cake with chocolate frosting from this book.
This month our local library had a board game and puzzle swap, so we dropped off five puzzles and the next day we picked out four new puzzles and one game to bring home.
Andrew had both Ascension Day and Victoria Day off work and it was nice to have him around to help with the kids and take them biking to the park.
Just this past weekend we visited Andrew’s parents and had a good time talking, reading, and eating (including sauerkraut chocolate cake!).
Watch
We are still watching Death in Paradise, a couple of episodes each weekend. Also enjoying Jeopardy! on YouTube and when we were at the hotel in Toronto we caught some renovation shows on HGTV, which felt like a blast from the past.
Listen
A surprisingly catchy songs about hummus!
Meditate
“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” – 1 Corinthians 15:58
For me, one May enjoyment was watching the Coronation of King Charles streamed on BBC. Thanks for the book recommendation; it’s now on hold at the library.
