Happy Victoria Day! In the past I’ve written about Queen Victoria’s children and namesakes, as well as movies that feature her. As you can imagine Victoria had many, many titles, nicknames, and epithets. This article explains many of them and I decided to share the pet names and terms of endearment with you.
Drina
Abbreviation of Victoria’s given name Alexandrina, which she never liked. (When she ascended the throne she officially assumed her middle name Victoria.)
Mai Blume / May Blossom
These nicknames for Victoria were used by her grandmother Augusta Duchess of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld and her mother the Duchess of Kent.
Vickelchen
Her grandmother and mother also called her Vickelchen — “little Vicky.”
Gutes Fräuchen / Gutes Weibchen
The German terms for “good little wife” were Prince Albert’s terms of endearment for Victoria.
Gangan
Victoria’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren called her Gangan.
Duck
The nickname given to Victoria by her grandson, Kaiser Wilhelm II.
Interesting! I’ve read a lot about Queen V, but never heard about the nicknames. Gangan!
