- The Big Dipper is not a constellation, but an asterism within the constellation Ursa Major (the Great Bear). Asterisms are recognizable patterns of stars that are not one of the official 88 constellations. (They can be found within constellations or spanning more than one constellation.)
2. Joyce Kilmer, the poet who wrote “Trees” (“I think that I shall never see / A poem lovely as a tree”), was not a woman but a man, a father of five, who was killed in action during World War II at the age of 31.
3. Reading Plutarch’s Lives can help you understand the Gospels because they are written more like a “Life” than a modern biography; they are also similar in length, which is about the length of one physical scroll. (Thank you, Tom Cox, the guest on this episode of The New Mason Jar podcast!)
4. Labour Day was celebrated in North America before May 1st (International Workers’ Day, Labour Day, or May Day) became a communist holiday.
5. “Mr. Tambourine Man” was written by Bob Dylan, but both Dylan and the Byrds recorded their versions in January 1965.
6. Corn mazes did not become popular until the 1980s (but popcorn has been around since 4700 BC).
7. I found a canned salsa recipe that’s a keeper. The three recipes I tested were:
- The Very Best Salsa Recipe for Canning
- Zesty Salsa Recipe for Canning
- The Best Homemade Salsa for Canning
All were decent recipes, but we liked the last one (from Delish Knowledge) best because of the tomato to pepper ratio (you could always replace some green peppers with hot peppers) and the inclusion of tomato paste (also I don’t see the need to use lemon juice as some recipes do, when white vinegar is so cheap).
8. Garlic can turn blue when pickled due to a chemical reaction, but it is still safe to eat.
9. Okra can grow in Ontario.
