- A rückenfigur is a figure seen from behind in the foreground of a picture (see above), particularly associated with German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich. (The kids and I studied some of his paintings last year, but I did not learn this term until recently.)
2. I finally made hamburgers from scratch instead of buying frozen patties and they turned out better than I expected. (I pictured them shrinking up like meatballs!)
3. On the food theme, I learned that the first “waffles” were made in Ancient Greece and during the Middle Ages they were imprinted with Biblical scenes.
4. I think I finally got it in my head that a mink is much larger than a weasel; next time I see a “weaselly” creature I should know what it is!
5. The Fabric Centre in Owen Sound is a lovely store with lots of selection, even if it is smaller than Fabricland. I’m glad I went in after walking past countless times and I know we’ll be back once we get our fall sewing projects underway.
6. While at our family reunion in New Brunswick I heard some fascinating stories about my grandfather and his brothers during World War II. Sadly, he passed away in January at age ninety-eight. My aunt has done a lot of genealogy research and has photos and documents, so I hope to learn more about the family when I can.
7. Lightships (now obsolete) were ships that acted as lighthouses, sometimes with warning bells as well as lamps on tall masts.
8. The HMCS Oriole is the oldest vessel in the Canadian Navy. (The kids were thrilled to go on board when it visited Owen Sound.)
I like your number one item!. Actually I like them all. This month I learned how to do surgery on a squash plant to remove an icky worm called a squash vine borer. Whether the patient will survive is still undetermined.
Jeff and I have done this surgery before as well.
