Favourite Things: September Edition

I almost forgot about my September favourites blog post! Well, here are some things we’ve been up to and some recommendations if you are looking for something to read, cook, watch, etc.

Read

I loved the middle grade novel A Long Line of Cakes and definitely want to read others by the author (it reminded me of Everything on a Waffle and Sharon Creech’s novels e.g. Walk Two Moons). For readalouds we did two more in the Anna Hibiscus series as well as Anne of Avonlea.

I also began reading The Divine Comedy with a project called 100 Days of Dante; you read one canto every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and listen to a short accompanying lecture (around 10 minutes). My mom is doing it with me!

Eat

This was my birthday cake this year. I also recommend this easy Thai fish curry. If you know how much I love breakfast and trying new recipes, you won’t be surprised that I made lemon toasts from this cookbook and oat porridge puddings from this cookbook.

Do

It’s always lovely to do seasonal activities. We picked some apples (more in October I hope!) and visited baby rabbits, hosted a tea party on the first day of fall, and had a church picnic complete with games, potluck dinner, and singing (we could do without the wasps, though).

Shop

I bought a fall bouquet from this florist that I drive past every week; it’s nice to support a family-owned business that is closed on Sundays. I bought myself a few birthday presents from the Artists’ Co-op downtown (so fun to browse… I want to buy all the pottery and woodworking!).

Watch

I thought News of the World was an enjoyable movie (if you like Westerns… and who doesn’t like Tom Hanks?). The novel is on my TBR too; have any of you read it?

Meditate

“From where, then, does wisdom come?
And where is the place of understanding?
It is hidden from the eyes of all living
and concealed from the birds of the air.
Abaddon and Death say,
‘We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.’
God understands the way to it,
    and he knows its place.
For he looks to the ends of the earth
and sees everything under the heavens.
When he gave to the wind its weight
and apportioned the waters by measure,
when he made a decree for the rain
and a way for the lightning of the thunder,
then he saw it and declared it;
he established it, and searched it out.
And he said to man,
‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom,
and to turn away from evil is understanding.'” – Job 28:20-28
