It’s early September, which means my annual roundup of surprising archival discoveries. Here are some manuscript and painting (and sword) discoveries I’ve learned about since last year’s post.
During the restoration of a 15th century English manor house, construction workers discovered a page from a rare illuminated manuscript and a copy of the King’s Psalms (1568). (Read another report here.)
A Picasso still life was discovered under another painting of his, called Still Life.
After spending 40 years unrecognized in a private collection a painting by Artemisia Gentileschi went to auction last November.
Last year, “an elderly Frenchwoman had the surprise of her life when she found out that a humble religious icon hanging in her kitchen was worth millions of dollars.”
