Favourite Things: July Edition

I’ve been so grateful to have this month off from school (we’re taking August off too, but I’m going to start taking stock and making plans). Here are some of the things we’ve been up to.

Read

My favourite reads of July were all middle grade novels: The Wednesday Wars (2007), Luvvy and the Girls (1971), Hotel for Dogs (1971), and My Side of the Mountain (1959).

Eat

  • Two batches of homemade ice cream (mint and peanut butter)
  • Homemade dill pickles and peach salsa (I’d like to do more canning but I find it very time consuming)
  • Aloo paradas (whole wheat flat bread stuffed with mashed potatoes) from this cookbook
  • Banh mi (Vietnamese subs) based on this blog post

Do

  • Keeping cool with an inflatable pool and the local splash pad
  • Scavenger hunt of Owen Sound landmarks that we got from the library
  • Also from the library, sew-a-softie kits for the girls
  • Goods Exchange Day: we drove around and picked up quite a few items that people were discarding (kitchen chairs, bird feeder, welcome mat, puzzles, etc.)
  • Exterior house painting began this month (stay tuned for before and after photos in August!)

Meditate

“Whoever restrains his words has knowledge,
and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.”
– Proverbs 17:27

What are some of your July favourites?

I’ve only read one of those middle school books; guess I’d better request the others from our library, to stay ahead of the grandchildren who are reading so far ahead of their years!
