Favourite Things: February Edition

I went shopping this evening (to Value Village, Bulk Barn, and Zehrs) so here I am staying up late to finish this post. Thankfully, I’ve got some fun recommendations to share.

Read

I’ve been disappointed by several books so far this year, but the latest Ann Patchett is one I’d recommend. Also Wild Game by Adrienne Brodeur is an interesting/disconcerting memoir about a dysfunctional family (you can hear the author on Gretchen Rubin’s podcast). And I always love a Ramona book to read aloud.

I remembered to write down the titles of the library books we particularly enjoyed in February. Blizzard by John Rocco, The Big Angry Roar by Jonny Lambert, One Fox: A Counting Book Thriller by Kate Read, The Story About Ping by Marjorie Flack, The Piano Recital by Akiko Miyakoshi, Tap the Magic Tree by Christie Matheson, Burt Dow, Deep Water Man by Robert McCloskey

Eat

On Valentine’s Day we had chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast and ice cream sundaes after supper. I’d been wanting ice cream for a long time and it was delicious.

For our family’s traditional Pie Day this year I made tourtiere and oatmeal pie (reminiscent of pecan pie; very sweet with nuts and coconut).

I recently rediscovered broccoli salad with bacon, raisins, sunflower seeds, and red onion and also made pesto for the first time in a long while. Nice bursts of green in the winter.

Do

Turns out February was fairly busy.

  • Chinese New Year crafts at the library
  • Reading buddies at a nursing home (our first time)
  • Homeschool book sale just a few blocks from our house (I even scored some free books)
  • Volunteer lunch for the pregnancy centre
  • Winter Fest at Harrison Park put on by the church of some of our friends (skating, sledding, and abundant food)
  • Snow Day at Moreston Heritage Village
  • Dr Seuss storytime at the library
  • Playing outside after an enormous snowfall last week!!!

Meditate

“‘Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.’ When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, ‘Who then can be saved?’ But Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.'” – Matthew 19:24-26

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:4-7
