For us June was full of visits with relatives. I also read some great books. Read on for all my June favourites!
Books
Since I’ve already mentioned Light the Dark in two posts (here and here), I won’t say any more about it now.
I read Do More Better while on vacation and got fired up to be more productive (unfortunately it’s taking me longer than I’d like to get my act together now that we’re home again, but the book is short and straightforward – definitely worth checking out).
I read The Tunnel of Hugsy Goode out loud to my kids; it was a trifle long for them, but I recommend it if you want an imaginative story with a vintage feel (it was published in 1971) told from the perspective of an eleven-year-old boy.
Highlights of the Month
My parents visited us overnight twice this month (I’m really happy to be living close enough to make this possible). On their first visit we hiked from Inglis Falls to Harrison Park in Owen Sound, where we enjoyed seeing/feeding the birds, including pheasants and Trumpeter Swans (I loved hearing them after reading this book). We also had our landlords over for dinner and enjoyed food, conversation, and a board game. On their second visit we entertained ourselves at home with more food, books, and puzzles, then went to a friend’s wedding together.
The middle of the month was spent in New York at a long anticipated Bond family reunion at Beaver Camp, at the edge of the Adirondacks. It was a time of serious conversation, cousins grubbing in the sand together, canoeing and kayaking, fancy pants s’mores, and even a wedding! Earlier this year my brother-in-law got married in Hawaii (where he studies and his wife works), but they had another wedding at camp so more relatives and friends could join in. It was a very full week and we are left with lots of memories, pictures, plans to keep in touch, and a few lingering insect bites.
Games
I was introduced to this game at camp and am hoping for a chance to play it again.
Our local library lends board games and they girls had fun with this one.
Bible Verses
At his wedding, my brother-in-law shared how meaningful this passage has been in his life.
“The Lord your God is in your midst,
a mighty one who will save;
he will rejoice over you with gladness;
he will quiet you by his love;
he will exult over you with loud singing.” – Zephaniah 3:17
