As much as I long for spring, it’s still snowy and frigid here, so it’s the perfect time to share a poem that I wrote years ago, after I learned about a poetic form called a double dactyl. I followed almost all the rules and here’s what I came up with.
(If you’re interested in my attempt to write a different type of poem every month this year, sign up for my free newsletter here.)
Beautiful Daffodils
Beautiful daffodils
Wait by the windowsill
Watching the snow outside
Ready to bloom
Humblest of flowers these
Garden-variety
Blossoms are hiding in
Green-sheathed cocoons
Then when they open wide
Shining like little suns
Still they are wishing that
Winter were dead
Pitiful daffodils
Non-confrontational
Sighing at snowdrifts and
Hanging their heads
This is a wonderful poem! A very successful double-dactyl. Maybe you could get it published somewhere?
Thank you! I’ll look into that.
A really sweet creative poem! I confess I do not know the rules for a double dactyl, but this is nice regardless!
Thank you, Mary!
