Historical Highlights 084

Hello, dear readers. Today I’ve got some links relating to Tolkien, JFK, Walt Whitman, and the Brontes, not to mention a piece in praise of librarians. So without further ado, here are your historical highlights.

How exciting is this? “For the first time since the 1950s, an unprecedented array of Tolkien materials from the UK and the USA will be reunited in Oxford and displayed together in this seminal exhibition.” Wish I could find a way to visit England in 2018! If you go see Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth at the Bodleian Libraries, please, send me a postcard. 🙂

Yesterday was the centennial of the United States entering World War I. Click here to watch a two-minute video on the topic or read the story of hero Alvin C. York.

On April 26, John F. Kennedy’s 1945 diary will be sold by auction.

Check out an excerpt from Walt Whitman’s Guide to Manly Health and Training, “a recently discovered manifesto written by Whitman under a pseudonym in The New York Atlas in 1858.” (Don’t miss his praise of beards!)

Such an interesting look at a history professor’s decision to write a thesis along with his students.

You’ve probably heard me gush about libraries on this blog. Well, here’s a story of librarians helping to improve Wikipedia.

If you’re a fan of mysteries, you’ll swoon over this description of Otto Penzler’s private library.

Have you seen the new two-hour BBC drama about the Bronte sisters? I’d like to. (Find a short preview here.)

That’s all for this week. Don’t be shy if you have any interesting links to share!
