Emily P. Freeman has changed her “what I learned” link-up format to once a season, rather than once a month. So today I’ll still share what I learned in September and I’ll plan to join her link-up again at the end of autumn. Feel free to share what you learned (or a link to your blog) in the comments at the end of this post.
- Edward Lear taught painting to Queen Victoria.
2. Edinburgh was the centre of medical advances in the 18th and 19th centuries. (This book is fascinating; I may blog about it sometime.)
3. Lemon balm tea can be used to alleviate stress, tiredness, headaches, and even cold sores. (I haven’t tried this yet. Let me know if you do!)
4. The huge “rabbits” we see in Calgary are a type of hare called a white-tailed jackrabbit. Some differences between rabbits and hares are that rabbits are born naked in burrows, while hares are born with fur in nests above ground.
5. Buttons on men’s and women’s shirts are on different sides because in the past women were more likely to have someone else dress them.
6. You can make sweetened coconut out of unsweetened coconut by adding simple syrup (water + sugar) and spreading it out to dry.
7. And finally, now I know why barbecuing is the dad’s job. It’s hard to do it while also setting the table, rocking the baby, preparing the rest of the meal, and keeping the other kids out of trouble. Unless you like burnt hamburgers.
What did you learn in September?
This is an interesting list of things learned! I’m pleased to know them now too. Great job, Margaret!
